My Biography

I am both a practitioner and a teacher of the craft of therapy. I have trained hundreds of therapists, both in the U.S. and around the world. For the last 17 years, I have directed the master’s degree program in Marriage and Family Therapy at Mercy College in New York, helping new therapists to become excellent practitioners. 

I am the author of several books, including the popular books, Rituals for Our Times” Celebrating, Healing and Changing Our Lives and Our Relationships, looking at the rituals in all our lives as wellsprings of healing and care, and The Secret Life of Families: when keeping secrets can harm you, when keeping secrets can heal you -and how to know the difference, in which I focus on family secrets and what you can do about them. Both books were featured on Oprah Winfrey and other popular television programs. 

You can count on both my knowledge and leadership in the field – I am past president of the American Family Therapy Academy, past editor of the leading journal, Family Process, and recipient of top honors, including the award for Outstanding Theory and Practice from the American Family Therapy Academy, and the award for Outstanding Training from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
